The Impact of the Pandemic on Logistics
One of the more subtle but substantial impacts of the Pandemic is that suddenly everyone is talking about supply chain; from CEOs to Consumers! It used to be that supply chain was that unseen, unheralded thing that would come to mind only when one needed to ask, ‘where is my stuff?’ or something along those lines.
“We didn’t even have a logistics beat before the pandemic. Now we do” admits The NY Times, going on to predict that the impacts of the current glitches will extend well into 2022. So, while supply chain teams are scrambling to put out fires as best as they can, what can CEOs and CFOs do in the meantime? For sure the impact of these shortages is starting to crop up in quarterly results and that trend will only accelerate as we go into the holidays!
“A crisis is too valuable to go waste” is a common adage. And, it applies here in spades. Stronger, more resilient and more responsive supply networks will prevail on the other side of this disruption. They will out of necessity have to be digital and, where necessary, real time. In my opinion, while the supply chain team is busy putting out fires, It is the CEOs and CFOs that have this opportunity to re-think supply chain and its impact on balance sheet and brand. Make it digital and in real time, and enable seamless links to the departments that generate demand.
